ANALYTICS AND MEASUREMENT
Admittedly, most people would tell you to check it directly in your Google Analytics account. However, when you do not have access to the GA account of the site in question, what to do? Try Google Tag Assistant.

Google Tag Assistant is a well-known tool for web analysts. Running under the Chrome browser, it can detect, on any Web page, the type of Google tag implanted and the version of the implementation.

An intelligent tool, it not only detects Google Analytics and Universal Analytics codes (and many others), but it also offers suggestions to improve your implementation AND detects certain implementation errors. Sneaky way to check if your IT department and web analyst did their job well.

WHERE TO START?

  • First of all it's free, to install it, click on this  link
  • Click on the icon to the right of your browser:

Note that the icon can be of different colors (blue, green, yellow, red) and indicate a number (number of tags detected)

  • Click on the arrow to the right of "working" or "suggestion" or "critical issues" or "minor issues"

  • Just like the icon, the arrow can be of different colors (blue, green, yellow, red)

CASE WITH CLASSIC GOOGLE ANALYTICS CODE

Click on the arrow next to the URL and if “_utm.gif? » is located after  www.google-anaytics.com , this means that the Google Analytics code is implemented on the page you are currently viewing.

From the following example, we know that version 5.5.3 of the classic Google Analytics code is being used.

CASE WITH UNIVERSAL ANALYTICS CODE

Click the arrow next to the URL and if “collect? » is located after  www.google-anaytics.com , this means that the Google Analytics code is implemented on the page you are currently viewing.

From the following example, we know that version 1 of the Universal Analytics code is being used.

BONUS 1: SUGGESTIONS AND PROBLEMS

Here are examples of suggestions for improvement and implementation issues.

BONUS 2:  REMARKETING INDICATION

Another bonus, Google Tag Assistant also indicates if the site in question uses  Remarketing  for its advertisements.

Either classic Google Analytics code or Universal Analytics, the URL domain is  stats.g.doubleclick.net , see examples below.

Note that when it comes to Universal Analytics code, with  Remarketing , another URL line appears.
