User research

User researchUnderstand the needs and expectations of your users to respond to them better

Before launching into a redesign or any other restructure of your Web properties, make sure you really understand what your users are looking for, and confirm your strategic decisions with interviews, surveys and user testing.

User research also allows you to better understand you site’s inefficiencies and points of irritation, and effectively correct them, so you can avoid blind attempts at correcting problems.

Interviews

What content do your users actually need ? What do they expect of your online presence ? Conducting interviews will allow you to collect feedback from your users, as well as to confirm various hypotheses about your site. Depending on your needs, we can interview current users or potential users.

Online surveys

What do visitors think of your site ? Are they able to accomplish specific tasks on your site in an easy and satisfying way ? If they can’t, why not ? Adviso’s online surveys will allow you to collect valuable information from your most important stakeholders : your website visitors. You can count on them to know and identify your shortcomings, and you can count on our team to make the best suggestions to optimize their experience. Any client who uses a process of continual improvement for their site is strongly counselled to take this step.

Card sorting

Is the structure of your content intuitive for your users ? Is it easy for them to find the information they’re looking for ? Card sorting can help you answer these types of questions. This exercise asks participants to organize a collection of cards representing the content of your site into categories. The participants create groupings, name then, and put them in order. This is a way for us to better understand how your users perceive your content; a perspective that’s often very different from your own.

During an open card sort, the participant has complete freedom with respect to how they will name the categories, and what content will go within each. This model is most valuable when used prior to defining the structure of your site, since it can help you effectively organize your content.

In contrast, a closed card sort gives the participant much less latitude, since the category designations are already set. This test is recommended as a final step, in order to validate your hypothesis about the structure of your site.

Both types of card sorts can be done online with large groups of users, or in person with a more restricted number of participants. Our usability experts can help you decide.

User testing

Is your site easy for visitors to use ? Can they successfully complete their objectives ? Our usability specialists have proven expertise in user testing, whether it’s to understand their navigational patterns, or to validate important user experience decisions. Watching users navigate your site in a real situation is the best way to understand them, and by extension, to satisfy them. Even a small group of users can be enough to give useful results. With user testing you can :

  • Identify issues that your visitors encounter on your site ;
  • Ensure that you’re meeting your users’ needs ;
  • Precisely measure the usability of your site or prototype ;
  • Confirm your usability-related decisions.

If you’d like, you can sit in on user testing, to witness the results in real time. Whether you are present or not, we’ll provide you with audio and video recordings as well as a detailed report of the testing process.
