SES Toronto 2008 : Discovering MTurk
Publié le 19 juin 2008 par Louis-Dominic
During the « Web 2.0 & Search Engines » session, Chris Smith from Netconcepts talked a lot about user tagging. He suggested using a service called MTurk to get people to tag your content. What is MTurk? Well it’s not a first generation computer that will develop freewill and create an army of robots to destroy mankind as in Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, but it’s still awesome.
Basically, with MechanicalTurk (an Amazon service by the way) is a marketplace where you can pay users to perform simple tasks (named HITs for Human Intelligence Tasks) for very cheap.
Here’s a couple of examples:
- Transcript a 5 minutes podcast and get 5,37$
- Write a site review, put it on your blog with a backlink and get 3,00$
- Write a 350 word article about a predefined subject and get 4,00$
- Tag a picture and get 0,08$
For SEO, I can see the benefits. Apart from asking users to tag your content you could also ask them to transcript your videos. As we know, videos is already the “next big thing” and offering a transcript to search engines could improve drastically your visibility on video searches and traditional searches.
